UHC-Supported Browser Standards/Processes/Philosophy
Supported Browsers
All the applications on UHC’s Web site are compatible with Internet Explorer 6.0. The following applications have been tested with and are compatible with Internet Explorer 7.0 and Firefox 2.0:
- Faculty Practice Solutions Center®
- Benchmarking & Improvement Services
- Nurse Residency Program™
- Secure Data Exchange
- Core Measures Data Base
- Clinical Data Base and Consolidated Patient Data Feed
- Patient Safety Net®
- Supply Chain Informatics
Supported browser means that:
- UHC developers will develop new code or modify existing code to will work with the supported browsers.
- Web site problems associated with a supported version of a browser will be repaired. However functionality problems associated with a browser version that is not supported—e.g., Firefox 1.0—will not be repaired.
- Development work and costs related to making UHC Web site applications compatible with new browsers/versions will be charged back to the product owners.
- A new browser/version must be accepted by the industry as stable and defined as an "industry standard" before UHC will support it.
- Although UHC applications are compatible with both Internet Explorer and Firefox, there may be some functionality that works better on one than the other. For example, Cognos Power Play works on both platforms, but the experience is much better with Internet Explorer than with Firefox because the former allows the user to drag and drop dimensions and measures from within the tool. These are features inherent to the browsers. Requests to make the user experience similar to that offered by another browser will not be considered in such cases.
Changes in Browser Standards
Changes in the supported browsers' specifications require the unanimous consent of the Technology Services, Knowledge Management, and Member Services departments.
UHC will change the supported browsers for the following reasons:
- If the user base changes to another (usually newer) browser/version. This can be determined based on Web usage statistics and member interaction.
- If the industry deems a supported browser unstable, insecure, or otherwise technically flawed.
- If UHC determines that functionality that is found in a specific browser/version is needed.
Final adoption of a new browser requires that the UHC Web site and all Web site products function properly with the browser/version. Final corporate acceptance of a browser/version will require complete regression testing by the product owners.
