There are 2 categories of UHC membership: principal and general.

Principal Member

  • Nonprofit integrated academic medical center, defined as follows:
    A nonprofit, nonfederal teaching hospital or health system that has a documented affiliation agreement with a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and meets 1 of 3 criteria:
    • Is under common ownership with a medical school
    • The majority of the medical school department chairs either serve as the hospital’s chiefs of service or are responsible for appointing the hospital’s chiefs of service
    • Has a reputation for excellence in service, teaching, and research as determined at the discretion of the UHC Member Board of Directors, or its designee, based on the following considerations:
      • Supports undergraduate medical education
      • Has an employed clinical faculty with a centralized practice plan
      • Sponsors or participates in a minimum of 10 graduate medical education programs or has 75 residents and an IRB (ratio of interns and residents to beds) of at least 0.10
      • Supports clinical research
      • Is designated by the medical school dean or university president as a primary clinical teaching site

General Member

  • Nonprofit teaching hospital (e.g., Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) and COTH-eligible hospitals) by invitation only
    • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission consider a “major” teaching hospital to be a teaching hospital with an IRB at or above 0.25. COTH membership is limited to organizations that have a documented affiliation agreement with a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Typically, these organizations must sponsor, or participate significantly in, at least 4 approved, active residency programs. At least 2 of the approved residency programs should be in medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, family practice, or psychiatry.
  • Nonprofit specialty hospital (e.g., pediatrics, cancer, orthopedics)
  • Faculty practice plan affiliated with a nonprofit integrated academic medical center
  • International organization
  • Partner organization
  • Nonprofit community or other hospital that is part of a principal or general member’s system or network, or a member of a partner organization that is not eligible to be a principal member (sponsored)
