Access Specialized UHC Nursing Quality Data Base in January

A new database to help members benchmark their National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) data against custom compare groups from UHC membership will be ready in early January. More than 100 UHC members have already signed waivers to release their NDNQI quarterly data updates to UHC so that they can obtain peer-level data comparisons and customized, nursing-sensitive reports through the use of the UHC Nursing Quality Data Base. Get Started Today for 2011 Joint Commission Surveys

Image of 2011 UHC Accreditation Resource GuideUHC's comprehensive Accreditation Resource Guide is popular: it is the second most downloaded item from the UHC Web site. Find out why by reading the updated 2011 edition, a resource developed with UHC member input. "The most valuable lessons come from colleagues who share their insights from preparing for and undergoing Joint Commission surveys," said Larry Poniatowski, principal consultant for UHC's Accreditation Services.

The guide includes UHC's accreditation process resources and the Continuous Survey Readiness: A Best Practice for Safe, High-Quality Patient Care white paper. Single Sign-On Goes Live for UHC, Novation Web Sites

Earlier this month, UHC and Novation implemented single sign-on (SSO) technology for the UHC Web site and UHC Marketplace (hosted by UHC's supply contracting company, Novation), allowing members to easily navigate between the 2 sites and access a robust array of resources and tools. Read more.

Sign Up for a Web Conference: Ensuring Readmission Appropriateness

EHR logoJoin UHC and Executive Health Resources (EHR), the Physician Advisor Company, for a complimentary Web conference examining how to create an admission review process that proactively addresses the appropriateness of readmissions. This event, to be held on December 15 at 1:00 PM central, will provide insight into building and optimizing an admission review program that leverages utilization review and physician advisement. According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), more than 13% of 30-day readmissions and $12 billion (approximately 80% of all Medicare spending on readmissions) is avoidable through the use of best practices. UHC Membership Reaches 112

North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (NSLIJ) joined UHC with board approval in October, bringing with it 4 tertiary care hospitals (Lenox Hill Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Hospital, and Staten Island University Hospital) as well as 8 community hospitals and a children's hospital. The NSLIJ system has more than 5,600 hospital and long-term care beds and is the second-largest secular nonprofit health system in the nation.

Earlier this month at the December board meeting, 2 additional members were approved: the USC University Hospital, a 411-bed acute care facility in Los Angeles, and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to caring for children.

 UHC's full membership now numbers 112; associate members total 254.

"We are thrilled to welcome these prestigious organizations into UHC and expect that they will benefit greatly from UHC's power of collaboration," said Irene Thompson, UHC's president and chief executive officer.

Spend Data Collection Made Easy

Throughout 2010, UHC has been working with its supply contracting company, Novation, to further enhance their data and analytics offerings to supply chain members. Since the beginning of the year, data intake and the preparation and processing of files for SpendLINK, UHC's spend analytics tool, have been successfully transitioned to Novation.

Another process improvement initiative is automating the acquisition of members' procurement data to provide more timely and accurate reports while significantly reducing members' workload. Novation is offering this new process to UHC supply chain members that use SpendLINK regularly. Read more.

Regional Meetings Set Following Success of New York Database Symposium

Nearly 100 performance improvement professionals from member hospitals in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut recently attended the first regional meeting on use of the UHC Clinical Data Base/Resource Manager and UHC's performance improvement program, Imperatives for Quality, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Members Learn New Tools, Benefit From Networking

"I enjoyed this day and it exceeded my expectations." "Very professional; enough specifics yet easy-to-read presentations." "I was able to connect with peers and exchange numbers, and I felt supported." These were some of the comments from UHC members who attended an orientation held at UHC's corporate offices on October 19-20.

Five representatives from Oregon Health & Science University and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, Inc. (The Medical College of Wisconsin) learned about UHC's programs and services, comparative databases, and other resources. They networked with each as well as UHC staff to learn about current issues, solutions, and best practices.

The next on-site orientation will be held in April 2011. The UHC overview and Web tour will be conducted via Web conference every other month throughout 2011, beginning on February 22 at 12:00 PM central. Access Managed Care Contract Comparisons Online for Improved Negotiations

Contract Compass iconMembers that submit financial data to UHC's Clinical Data Base can now access Contract Compass online. Contract Compass is an interactive benchmarking tool and a packaged pricing model that allows custom comparisons of managed care contracts, by individual payer or insurance product, with those of peers on a national or regional basis to support more effective contract negotiations.

Mortality, Other Indicators Updated in IQ Report

The newly released IQ Report containing 2nd-quarter 2010 data features new indicators in:

  • Mortality and length of stay
  • Core measures/CAHPS
  • Capacity management

"Members can be assured of up-to-date metrics and other report enhancements in each quarterly report, as UHC is committed to providing the most accurate and current data available," said Emmet Goldberg, associate vice president, Operations.

Ten Members Named Supply Chain Top Performers

UHC recognized 10 member organizations that have made significant and measurable achievements in improving their supply chain performance and consistently model best practices in supply chain optimization. Awards were presented at the UHC Supply Chain & Clinical Resources Council meeting held on October 28-29 in Newport Beach, Calif. Read more.


Top Performers Give Tips to Reduce Supply Chain Costs

Healthcare Financial Management Association newsletter"10 Ways to Reduce Supply Chain Costs" was published in the October 2010 issue of the Healthcare Financial Management Association's Healthcare Cost Containment newsletter. The article describes 10 strategies for reducing supply chain costs and improving efficiency from the top performers in UHC's 2010 Performance Excellence Collaborative: Denver Health, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and Wishard Health Services.
